I’ve never been one for big birthday celebrations. My twin sister Tallulah has always been more into them, so I’ve usually let her take the lead. But with her not living in LA, it was my turn to step up. I felt inspired to do something different—bringing my friends together to celebrate the end of summer and the start of fall. My birthday felt like the perfect excuse for a fun evening with the people I love.
I knew I wanted to host an outdoor dinner party, so I started with a unique tablecloth to set the tone. I found this funky, romantic one with deep red accents on Maison Flâneur, one of my favorite online home shops. After the dinner, I reached out to see if they’d offer a promo code for my readers, and they agreed! Use the code HELLOFLANEURS for 15% off at checkout. Their site is full of amazing finds, and the tablecloths I picked for my birthday are still available, though in limited quantities, so don’t wait too long. I went with the ecru, but I’m wishing now that I’d ordered both the ecru and burgundy to layer like in the picture below. Maybe one of you will give that a try!
What’s great about buying tablecloths is their ability to transform any meal into something special. They’re not just for big events; you can use them for everything from spontaneous date nights to everyday family dinners, adding a touch of charm to any occasion.
After ordering the tablecloths, I used Canva (my go-to app) to create a custom invitation that matched the tablecloth design, then uploaded it to Paperless Post. It might seem a bit extra, but I find so much joy in putting thought and energy into the small details.
Next, I focused on what furniture to rent. I decided to go with bamboo folding chairs by Chivari because they felt classic with a twist, and I’m so happy with my choice. I was debating between them and a more traditional bistro chair. You really can’t go wrong, but it’s so fun to play around with different looks for the special nights you plan throughout your life.
For the plates, I kept things simple with classic white, paired with stainless steel flatware. I gave each guest two glasses—one for wine and one for water. Honestly, setting up is one of my favorite parts of any gathering. It might sound a little silly, but I love arranging the table, pulling together the flowers, and figuring out the seating plan. Seeing it all come together is so satisfying. I have to give a huge shoutout to my husband for helping with everything, especially since we were setting up during a ridiculous LA heat wave—over 100 degrees! Thanks, babe haha (you’re the best)!
For the flowers, I went with my favorite bud vases from Amazon and picked up everything at Trader Joe’s—honestly, their flowers are hard to beat for both quality and price. I chose a mix of pink, white, and red to tie in with the tablecloth. One of my best friends came over to help arrange them, and we added in three large antique crystal vases from my collection, placing one in the center of each of the three tables I’d pushed together. The bud vases were scattered around, and I have to say, I’m pretty happy with how it all came together.
We served Negronis (my favorite cocktail) along with red and white wine. One of my favorite gifts from our wedding registry was this beverage tub—it’s perfect for hosting large groups, plus I love the silver hammered look. Even better, it’s currently on sale.
A week before my birthday, my sister was in town and staying with me. We made a stop at the Brentwood Country Mart and wandered into Dôen, one of my favorite brands. Right away, I spotted a deep red dress with bows that, oddly enough, matched my tablecloth perfectly. Obviously, I had to try it on, and the second I saw the cowl neck, I was sold. It’s one of those pieces I know I’ll wear over and over again—and I couldn’t recommend it more.
Last but definitely not least: the cake. I opted for a Classic Icebox Cake from Magnolia, a childhood favorite that never disappoints. The crispy chocolate wafer cookies layered with whipped cream make it the perfect cookies and cream dessert. Everyone loved it, and if you have a Magnolia Bakery nearby, definitely give it a try. I also served a mixed berry cobbler, which was a real crowd pleaser.
